Hi, did you add the initrd line?
i've got:
title 2.4
kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda5
initrd (hd0,4)/boot/initrd
BTW: you don't need to build a new kernel, I tried a lot, but it's easy:
during boot optain a shell:
modprobe reiserfs
exit
when the system is up do a:
mkinitrd /lib/modules/2.4.xxxx/
that seems to be all
