The potato release of sane and xsane is not recent. (As expected of a
stable release.) After compiling the kernel with support for the SCSI
card my scanner is on, I had to get a more recent version to get my
scanner to work. I deinstalled the potato version and grabbed the
current version off of the sane web site, and installed it in
/usr/local. People with more debian experince might be able to tell
you how to get the woody or sid version to work with your potato
system.
