Reinstalling various X packages didn't fix it, but I found the problem. I needed xlibmesa3 instead of mesag3 Mesa libraries - the former includes chipset specific DRI modules the latter doesn't (I'm not sure if there're any other differences between these packages - none that are noted in their descriptions, anyway).
