About lame: afaik there are patent issues with LAME. Fraunhofer has patented the algorithms used in the ISO reference implementation. Even though LAME does not use the reference implementation any longer (afaik) (they have rewritten that code, and they are using their own psycho-acoustic model, etc.), they might still violate patents.
