I too faced the same problem, but on updating X 3.3.6 to 4.1 on
potato. I noticed the same problem even under Mandrake 8.0. Appears
like X 4.1 does not like/accept the modelines of 3.3.6.

Mine is Matrox G200. I copied the modelines from the old config file.
Still, I could not get the earlier max. resolution (in my case
1152x864).

Downgrading X makes xine not run in fullscreen mode. So it is not an
option ;-)
