Scusi non parlo italiano. If you need to recompile the kernel, install and try the package "kernel-package". It makes the task of compiling and installing a new kernel very simple. Also note that if you are running a Potato based system, you will need to upgrade many other packages in order for them to work properly with the new 2.4.x kernels.
