Does it make any difference if you give the lpr command as normal user or as 
root?

Do the files lpr and printcap exist and have the correct permissions? Example:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -l /usr/bin/lpr
-rwsr-sr-x    1 root     lp          20604 19. Jan 2001  /usr/bin/lpr
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -l /etc/printcap
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root         3133  2. Jan 00:20 /etc/printcap

Does it help to give the path explicitly: /usr/bin/lpr filename ?
