Current `best' version is /usr/bin/mawk.

There are 2 programs which provide `awk'.

Another solution :
# apt-get remove --purge mawk
Seems right to me, anyways, that 'awk' is provided by "mawk" whereas
'nawk' is provided by "gawk". At least, from reading the "History"
part of the GNU Awk Manual that seems to make a lot of sense.
