And did you compile it into your kernel?
There's a NFS-HOWTO that helped me back then, I don't remember
everything exactly. But you definitely need it in your kernel plus
the hosts-allow/deny files. 

When I manually mount it, the -t nfs isn't necessary, I've just
checked: "mount host:/path /mountpath" is all right (correct me if
this also depends on the kernel). I never have to start portmap
manually.
