Thanks Jesper.  That made me read again and realised that it was the
mouse protocol that works in XFree but not in xorg. I removed
xserver-xorg, deleted /etc/X11/xorg.conf and reinstalled it.  This
time the configuration looked different:

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier      "Configured Mouse"
        Driver          "mouse"
        Option          "CorePointer"
        Option          "Device"                "gpmdata"
        Option          "Protocol"              "ImPS/2"
        Option          "Emulate3Buttons"       "true"
        Option          "ZAxisMapping"          "4 5"

I just had to change "gpmdata" to "/dev/gpmdata" and now it works.
