What you've described is an impossible situation (unless you've been
rooted, or you've got some really weird setup, etc). Perhaps ( -- long
shot -- ) kdm or xdm or wdm started rather than gdm, and you just didn't
notice the difference? Try "ps ax | grp [xgkw]dm".
I'm not sure what OS version I'm running. How can find out? The OS
was installed about a month ago.
