For the record, I "solved" the problem by installing Ubuntu 5.10. Installation worked well - both the network card and the SATA interface were detected. Ubuntu can be found at http://www.ubuntulinux.org/
Still, after installation, there was a poblem with the ATI graphics card in the machine.
