Or do it automatically with a nice little application called
'archivemail' available for Debian. I have mine setup to archive every
30 days, via a cronjob. I'm using mbox format, with mutt.

Exactly and 'archivemail' one can append the month and gzip the data. In
conjunction with grepmail, one has a great search facility for these
archived e-mails.
