I suggest you replace any stored image at boot time, e.g. with code
like this in /etc/lilo.conf:
# Enable graphical boot menu:

bitmap=/boot/debian-bootscreen-woody.bmp
install=/boot/boot-bmp.b
bmp-colors=1,,0,2,,0
bmp-table=120p,173p,1,15,17
