I think the directions here should work: http://forums.osdir.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=251 the main theme is boot from live cd, mount the root partition, edit your password file (be it /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow), delete the root password in that file, boot again into linux on hard disk.
