You haven't increased my confusion. :) And what you say there is quite correct. As you pointed out earlier, all those 'Stage1' mentions should be 'stage1', I was typing it in from a scribbled note I made. But anyway, Linux can see those files on the drive and grub apparently can't. They're there right now, in both directories (since grub-install copied them from /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc to /boot/boot/grub, and I copied them to /boot/grub just to make sure), and they're real files, not symlinks.
