If there is any question concerning the router, and if you have a spare
machine with a pair of ethernet cards, download an ISO image of
SmoothWall Express 2.0 (www.smoothwall.org), burn a CD, install
SmoothWall on the spare machine, and see whether the situation improves.
Installation of SmoothWall takes about 20 minutes, and ample help
screens are provided. No configuration is required, other than entry of
data such as IP address of the LAN. SmoothWall is the only
firewall/router package which I have found which is simple enough for a
novice to install and get running.
