Do you only have an /dev/sda or do you also have /dev/sda1. I normal USB flash key has the basic device with a single VFAT partition on it - so you will get two devices appear in the kernel. If you are talking about those during startup /etc/init.d/xxxx start and /etc/init.d/xxxx stop where xxxx is the particular daemon.
