Take a look at this: http://people.debian.org/~torsten/ldapnss.html I then used the package cpu to manage adding users and groups to my ldap server. I am sure there are better tools such as luma, etc. However, cpu (debian package) was all I needed for my simple set up (much like what you are looking to do but with fewer machines).
