Yes. No jest, you really did just upgrade from one distribution of Debian to another. When Etch is "released" for real, there will be detailed instructions for those problems which the release team has discovered, if any. I remember reading this little quip many years ago: Debian's installer is so bad because Debian users just don't care. You only have to use it once. Now you know why Debian users tend to stay Debian users. All that said, after several cycles of dist-upgrades, there really does come a time when it's a good idea to do a wipe/install. The last time I did that was after my server had been running for 8 years, and the network files were pretty crufty. :^) With a desktop system, every few years there seems to be a reason to reinstall, so far mostly due to buying new laptops, disks, and/or the incompetence of hardware service people who "help" me by putting Windows XP back on the system while they have it helpless in their clutches.
