XFree86 3.3.6 is several years old. It probably must be compiled with the gcc version that was current at that time. New gcc versions often enforce language rules more strictly and break old programs that don't conform. Both gcc 2.7.2 and 2.95 are available in Etch (aptitude install gcc272 gcc-2.95).
