Miguel .... 

  I manually removed the  /usr/lib/python2.3  directory
  a few weeks ago from my Debian Etch system and have
  encountered no ill affects thus far .... 

  As I didn't explicitly install python2.3 myself
  I don't know where it came from ....

  However, I have  no  experience with Debian Lenny,
  so .... Your Mileage May Vary ....
