By default, apt-get wants to install later versions of packages, so if
it sees both libc6 2.6.1 and libc6 2.3.6, apt-get will prefer the later
version, 2.6.1.
Thanks. I guess apt doesn't sense that the system is "stable" - I
wonder if there is a way to tell it so? Maybe by pinning "*" to
stable, somehow?
Yes. Read "man apt_preferences" to find out how to pin packages and
distributions.
