xfce4 and gnome are built on some of the same libs, so that's not a
clean comparison of WM/DE for purposes of debugging. If you can stand
it, drop gdm and go to a completely different WM like IceWM using
startx. See if that helps. 

I kind of doubt that its a WM issue, though.
