wget initialization syntax errors

I created ~/.wgetrc and put into it simple options such as: 

  --mirror

but when I run $ wget on a target, I get a syntax error for every
option in that file for the line following the option line. The debug
option apparently only works if the rc file syntax is correct.

For example, with no uncommented line in ~/.wgetrc other than the line
number 12 "--mirror", I get:

  ~$ wget http://www.USS-Irex.info
  wget: Syntax error in /home/brownh/.wgetrc at line 13.
