(I did not follow this thread from the beginning, so I might have missed
 something.)

I get the impression that you have a problem with the "cdrkit" package
from Ubuntu. (No package with this name exists in Debian.) I think it
would be better if you contacted the Ubuntu support forums
(http://ubuntuforums.org/) to get help with your problems. This mailing
list is dedicated to the Debian GNU/Linux distribution, and even though
we are always willing to help newbies, we generally do not know enough
about Ubuntu (which is based on Debian, but there are significant
differences).

Of course, if you want to give Debian a try, you can download
images of installation CDs/DVDs here:

http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/debian-installer/

The installer allows you to set up a dual-boot system so that you can
compare Debian and Ubtunu side-by-side. Note that you can also install
from a USB stick (since you currently seem to have problems burning
CDs).

Debian offers a very stable server platform as well as a bleeding edge
branch which might be better suited for desktop and laptop usage.
Another strong point of Debian is that its developers work very hard to
ensure that all programs in the main repository are really free. The
Debian legal team evaluates all software licenses very carefully (these
convoluted legal documents can be very confusing for laymen like you and
me). The DL team works very hard so that we do not have to worry that
some programmer suddenly starts suing us for using or distributing
his/her supposedly "free" programs. (Sometimes, when people focus very
intensely on some specialized technical problem, they can become a bit
strange and unpredictable. It is better not to risk anything in such
cases.)

I hope this helps you with your issues. Take care.
