AMSN, Ekiga, Kopete among others work fine on Lenny and don't leave you open to the risk of vendor lock-in. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vendor_lock-in Skype uses a proprietary protocol for audio (I don't know about Skype video) whereas the ones that I listed above don't.
