I use vlc and it just works. Since some libs (dvdlibwhatever) are in debian-multimedia but they can't be listed as dependancies, they are listed as recommends. Add debian-multimedia.org to your sources.list, update, install the d-m keyring package and update again, then browse aptitude to vlc (or whatever) and see what is now recommended.
