As previously reported, after installing Gnome and Xorg the X-Window startup was trapped in a loop before login and top -i showed root running a program gdmgreeter with a continuously changing pid.
Purging Gnome and Xorg and rebooting did not solve the problem. Running apt-get autoremove removed a large number of unused programs that were part of the Gnome installation.
