The net stuff should be there.  You need to set up
/etc/network/interfaces.  If you look in your file, you'll see what
types of things should be in your friend's.  There's a man page on the
interfaces file to help.  

Likely, you have an NIC that plugs into the ASDL modem and gets
configured with dhcp.
