Thanks for the tip, I hadn't realized 'apt-get update' doesn't update /var/lib/dpkg/available, just pulls down the Packages files. Another thing I find peculiar is that 'apt-get install linux-source-2.6.18 linux-headers-2.6.18-6-486' also pulled down gcc-4.1 and associated packages but left gcc-3.3 as the default so that the build failed when I tried to create a new kernel.
