I don't know if this will help debugging this any, but apt-get requires a password but the Update Manager (Synaptic, I believe) from within Xfce4 doesn't.

Has anyone else noticed this? I wouldn't mind forcing it to request root's password, but there are no apparent options to adjust the security settings from within the application itself. Might this be an issue to do with membership on specific groups perhaps?

Thanks for any ideas.

I rather think the root password has been stored by the gnome password manager, but I wouldn't know where to look, never used it.

That would make sense, and as life would have it, apparently the issue as far as I can determine. Rebooting the machine and logging back into Xfce4, I tested it by calling synaptic and it immediately defaulted to requesting the root passwd. The "remember passwd" button was checked though - so that's more than likely what the issue was, although in my own defence I would not ordinarily set that, so don't know why I would've done this now. Only pays to be more attentive I guess. I'm going to assume pebkac unless it happens again.

Cheers
