Sorry I am late to the party, but if you don't mind adding the debian -multimedia repository then I highly recommend handbrake. Details: http://debian-multimedia.org/dists/stable/main/binary-i386/package/handb rake-gtk.php You can convert to other formats, clean up the picture, shrink down to a certain size, ect ect ect.
