I'd already tried running it as root without success, but your
suggestion of xmms-cdread made xmms work. After further experimentation
and more searches on google I found that cdcd, cccd, and ahcd also work.
So presumably there is some incompatibility in the code for dcd and
cdplay. I have a Via 686B chipset, which seems to have caused some
problems according to one source.
