http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6695 so i temporarily updated my sources.list to lenny, installed *just* a newer 2.6.26 kernel, and that fixed everything. next step: upgrade from etch to lenny. i'm sure there will be more questions when that happens. thanks to all who gave advice. rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P.
