Samba? DHCP? ppp? OpenVPN? vpnc? resolvconf entries in /etc/network/interfaces? 3G (UMTS) modem? Proprietary networking software? There are several possibilities. Sometimes taking a look at the symlink for /etc/resolv.conf, or its contents, can point one in the right direction.
