Hi, Ron -- Unfortunately I can't currently reproduce the problem: since I installed the package using synaptic, aptitude reports that the package is installed!
I think for now we should regard this issue as closed. If it comes up again (likely, given my absurdly low level of linux competence), I'll reopen it in a fresh thread. -PT
