I was indeed using debian multimedia repository, but purging VLC and
reinstalling after removing the multimedia repository from sources.list
made no difference :S

Any particular step I missed?

- removed debian multimedia from /etc/apt/sources.list
- # aptitude purge vlc
- # aptitude update
- # aptitude install vlc
