I tried both suggestions: 1) Copying the contents of ~/.profile into ~/.bash_profile. No effect. 2) Removing ~/.bash_profile and /etc/skel/.bash_profile. Still no effect. Is there any way I can see *precisely* what happens during a user's login - what files are being sourced and such? Thanks for the answer.
