Just a minor correction. The number of hardware platforms supported has a minor impact on the length of Debian's release cycle. If you look back, Debian releases have been widely seperated even when it was just x86 only. The much larger reason seems to be the number of packages and the relatively few Debian developers who work on Debian as their full time job.
