Hopefully, all went ok. I was glad when DKMS came along as it meant I didn't have to turn the X server off to perform the necessary incantations to get the latest nVidia driver installed and working. This mainly because, at that time, I didn't understand xorg, kernel modules and so forth well enough to get myself out of trouble, if the worse happened. I'm no expert now, but at least I have an idea of what to do.
