This is how I get rid of it.  It is the only way that I have found of 
conclusively stopping it interfering.  

For desktops I use /e/n/i with static IP.

For laptops/netbooks I use wicd with DHCP.

I now purge NM as soon as I boot up after I have finished installing.  Life is 
definitely easier and less frustrating without it.
