sorry to reply so late, i was assigned a business trip for 2 weeks, now i am back. ;)
actually the entry in the xorg.conf generated by "Xorg :1 -configure" was "nvidia", i changed it to "nouveau" because i could not startx. i did not mention that in the first mail. Apologies!
