There are some instructions here: http://wiki.debian.org/ALSA But the order the card is detected should not be a problem for your USB device, I mean, ideally the first card (the "default" that system uses) should be the internal one unless you want to get the sound for the headset on every start :-) I would instist on the basics (volume settings, replugging, select the right input/output source, reload alsa service, try with Ekiga that is very good to check this kind of devices...)
