Why are you running such an old kernel?
The 3.0 series PAE kernels won't run on this machine...
But it apparently does not only affect 2.6 kernels...
Hi, unrelated to the issue here in discussion, but about running the
new kernel series in old P4 with pae (I got a p4 2.8 ht). I found in
http://bugs.debian.org/659866 a boot option to boot the new kernel
series in my old p4 and it works.
processor.nocst=1
Hope it helps someway,

Sorry, wrong link, it was http://bugs.debian.org/632734
If you read all the way to the end of that bug report [1] the Fedora
people found the problem which was acpi-related. They apparently have
a 3 series kernel now which handles everything.
Good news for us I guess :)
