I would just download the binary tarball from openoffice.org. It is fairly slow moving (especially now that they have achieved a 1.1 release, I would imagine). If you were running unstable, that would probably cure your problem, but I imagine you are not interested in running unstable.
It is actually very easy to do, and less hassle than what you are
going through now. Of course, it takes more space (I don't know if
space is a concern for you) since I believe it has all the necessary libraries in the distribution. So all of it gets installed somewhere
in /opt or /usr/local (depending on what you choose).
