Then I guess the recipe I provided before it suits your needs. To migrate the current messages to your new-owned system you can use a "dummy" IMAP account to copy/paste (or simply move) the e-mails between the remote server and your which will work regardless the MUA in use. Once all of the accounts are created in your own e-mail server and working you can start polling the new messages from your remote server using fetchmail/getmail and configure your users e-mail clients to contact your e-mail server (via imap/pop3) instead your hosted one.
