You mean it happens when you write down the recipient e-mail address in the "To:" field? Although it's months since I've not used their webmail interface, what you describe sounds to me like one of the many crazy Gmail's features :-) Anyway, check if the same happens when using a different browser (Chrome, Opera, Epiphany/Web, Konqueror...).
