I don't use it otherwise, but this just worked for me:

in /etc/exim4/update-exim4.conf.conf
dc_smarthost='smtp.gmail.com::587'

in /etc/exim4/passwd.client
*.google.com:myusern...@gmail.com:mypassword
(any other entries commented out)

in /etc/exim4/exim4.conf.localmacros
REMOTE_SMTP_RETURN_PATH=myusern...@gmail.com
REMOTE_SMTP_HELO_DATA=(You may not need this. I use my dyndns)
