Aha. I'll be that's it. I use Disconnect (http://disconnect.me) to keep google, facebook, and twitter from tracking me around the interwebs (this plugin is highly recommended). I'll bet it is breaking the connection between the site and google's captcha stuff. I didn't even think about since it is effectively fire-and-forget. I ran the gamut with adblock and noscript, but that may be the secret sauce... I will try and report back.
